Jon first began teaching in 1987 after graduating high school. He offered both private instruction and drum ensembles. As a member of the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, Jon received the corps’ award of “Best performer” in 1990 and took 7th place in the Drum Corps International (DCI) solo competition. Jon’s mastery of rudimental percussion led to the publication of his “Hybrid Rudiments” in “The Rudimental Cookbook” co-written by Edward Freytag. Throughout the 90’s, Jon wrote percussion scores for numerous high drum lines and attended the University of Tennessee for Percussion Performance, where he began focusing on hand percussion. He subsequently worked as a percussionist and drummer in jazz-fusion, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, American popular styles, and theater ensembles. Starting in the mid ‘90’s, Jon focused primarily on touring and live performance. During this time, he has performed on 20 CD’s ranging from Americana and folk to rock and jazz. Jon currently tours all around the country with the Knoxville-based folk/swing band, Christabel & The Jons.
